Death is a personal journey that each individual approaches in their own unique way. Nothing is concrete, nothing is set in stone. There are many paths one can take on this journey but all lead to the same destination.
As one comes close to death, a process begins; a journey from the known life of this world to the unknown of what lies ahead.
This is looking for answers as to how my friend, Mairin, died. Mairin phoned me in a state of panic, asking me to phone the hospital. I did this and the hospital asked me to drive here into the A&E (Accident and Emrgency Dept.). Two weeks later, Mairin had passed away. It was a great shock to the few people who kept vigil with her in the Hospital and, finally, in the Hospice. We had to watch the procedures detailed in the above article - and didn't really know what we could do to help. The hardest thing to take was that the Hospice gave neither food nor liquids to Mairin over the four days she was with them. Obviously they knew more about the signs of death than we did. R.I.P. Mairin! Thanks to the Staff of the hospital and hospice for everything they did to ensure dear Mairin was comfortable and pain free right to the end.
