Should You Leave Your Lights On At Night? It Depends
You're about to go to bed. You flip off the light switch. It's pitch dark. As you stumble your way through the living room, you glance at your neighbor's house where light is peeking through the windows.
You stop in your tracks and wonder: Would a burglar choose to break into your dark house or your neighbor's brightly lit house?
I once went on holiday, and because my key-holders also were away on holiday, I decided to leave my lights on day and night. After a couple of days, the police were busy trying to track me down. At least they were doing their job! Before you rush in to tell me I should have a timer - I do have several. Just didn't have time to set them before I left!
I get you points, @jenn823. I'd be more concerned about when I go away - whether or not to leave lights on. it probably is essential to leave some sort of light on, when you're away. I'm fairly lucky that I live in a built-up area, where my neighbours generally have a lot of lights on. That's not to say we have our fair share of burglary from time to time.
Yes I do leave lights on when I'm out, but usually I'm coming back at a reasonable time. Leaving them on day an night, is not such a good thing, I think. Probably a timer is a good idea.
We don't leave the outside light on but front and back do have censors so they automatically light up.
We have three censor lights in the house so they come on when you go to the toilet or want a drink.
During the night from the outside no lights show any night so wouldn't matter if we were on holidays or not plus living in an over 50's village our home is looked after by management and neighbours if any problems while away.

You are lucky, toetapping! Sounds like you are very safe.
